Text or email old customers? What actually gets replies

When you go back to an old list, you have two ways in. Email and text. People ask which one works. The honest answer is both, used for different jobs, and there are rules for text you cannot ignore.

Email is your workhorse

Email is where the real follow up lives. It is free to send, it holds a full message, people expect business email, and you can run a proper sequence over weeks without it feeling aggressive. For reactivating an old list, email carries most of the load. Just send it right, which mostly means staying out of spam.

Text is your closer

Text gets read fast, almost every time. That makes it powerful and easy to overuse. It works best for the short, timely moment. Confirming a call, nudging someone who already replied, answering a quick question. It is a terrible tool for a cold blast and a great tool for a warm one.

The rule you cannot skip with text

Texting people for business is regulated. You need permission before you text a marketing message, and you have to honor a stop request instantly. A past customer who gave you their number for a job is different from a cold lead who never did. When in doubt, lead with email, and let people opt into text by replying. That keeps you on the right side of it and keeps you out of trouble.

How to use both together

  • Open with email. It is the low risk way back into an old relationship.
  • When someone engages, that is your opening for a text if they are willing.
  • Use text for timing, not for pitching. A nudge, a confirmation, a quick reply.
  • Honor every opt out on both channels, automatically.

The point is the reply, not the channel

Whichever way someone raises a hand, the job is the same. Get that reply in front of a human quickly, tagged to the right person, before it cools off. Channel is just the door. Follow up is the house. If you are starting from a big old list, begin with reactivating old leads and build from there.
